Cheese and Bacon Turnovers Recipe

Today I am sharing with you one of the UK’s iconic appetiser cum breakfast recipe, cheese and bacon turnovers. This is a copycat of Greggs popular bacon and cheese wrap.  I love the way this pastry is described on their website “delicious bacon and cheese bundled together in a big, golden puff pastry hug”. No lie there but the only caveat is that this snack is better when you make it at home yourself. Related post: How to cook bacon in the air fryer.

Why you will love this recipe

It is simple and quick! It requires minimal ingredients and effort. Not much cooking is involved. It is a great snack or appetiser.

Ingredients

Store bought ready rolled puff pastry, I got mine from Aldi. Shredded cheddar cheese: substitute for any melting cheese of choice. Bacon: back bacon is what we mostly available in the UK, I usually cut with a scissors to fit each turnovers. If using streaky bacon, make sure to cut to size. Egg for egg wash

How to make cheese and bacon wrap

Preheat the oven at 190C / 375F Line a baking tray with a baking sheet then place the bacon on, partially bake the bacon in the oven for 5 minutes. remove from the oven and transfer to a kitchen towel to cool Unroll the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface or on the parchment paper it came with. Using a sharp knife cut the pastry into 8 equal parts. You can stack the pastry if desired, sprinkle a little bit of flour in between the square pastry and stack. Lightly whisk the egg and set aside Lay the bacon on each pastry diagonally, followed by the grated cheese. Fold the two ends of the diamond over the bacon and cheese, brush the egg wash on one of the edges and fold the other over giving it a small pinch. (this is important so that the pastry doesn’t open up during cooking) Repeat this for the rest of the pastry then transfer to a lined baking tray leaving space in between them. Egg wash the top of the pastry then bake in the oven for 20 to 25 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown. Remove it from the oven and leave to cool for about 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy

Tips

Leave the puff pastry in the fridge until you are ready to use it. It tends to become soft if left out for longer than necessary which might make it hard to work with. Use any type of melting cheese you desire. Add any chutney of choice to the bacon before adding the cheese for some extra delicious bite.
